Let's see if I remember how to write about MMA. I've been spending all of my time with my new baby and ignoring you like the stepchild I never wanted. You deserve better and I'm working on a few things. In the meantime, one of the better looking cards on paper takes place tomorrow in Oakland where Anderson Silva will defend his middleweight belt against the relentless smack talker Chael Sonnen.
Sonnen has done nothing but talk trash since this fight was announced. And it wasn't even just aimed at Silva. In perhaps my favorite bit in the history of nonsense, Sonnen claimed Lance Armstrong gave himself cancer due to steroid and PED abuse. Sonnen did this on a national radio show that you can listen to in the archive. But that didn't stop Sonnen from denying ever saying it. Then when he was played the audio clip on the Jim Rome show, he denied that was his voice. That's dedication my friends.
As long as I'm here, I might as well butcher some predictions. Per usual, my picks are in bold and I'm using the lines from the degenerates over at Bodog.
Ricardo Almeida -175 vs. Matt Hughes +145
I'll be rooting for the Brazilian Almeida but Hughes seems to know his way around Gracie Jiu Jitsu. I've never been a Hughes fan so it's not fun for me to pick him here. I do think his all around game might be a little too much for Almeida despite Hughes' sharp decline. Hughes via decision.
Rafael Dos Anjos -125 vs. Clay Guida -105
Guida is slightly submission prone which could spell danger against the jiu jitsu specialist Dos Anjos. If Guida can keep this fight standing up, which is my assumption here, I think he can control the match. Guida via 2nd round TKO.
Junior dos Santos -325 vs. Roy Nelson +250
I'm pretty excited for this fight. Roy Nelson has done nothing but become more likable while maintaining a nice winning streak. It would not shock me in the least if Nelson wins this fight by lay and pray or a knockout. But dos Santos has also been on a tear and has a good overall game. I like dos Santos to land a couple of combos and knock all of the marbles out of Nelson's Hungry Hungry Hippos physique. dos Santos via 3rd round TKO.
Jon Fitch -120 vs. Thiago Alves -110
Dana White said the winner of this fight will get the title shot against the winner of the St. Pierre-Koscheck fight. That was before Thiago Alves missed weight again and will be deducted 20% of his purse. If there's anything Dana White hates, it's fighters missing weight. Still, it should be a good fight though boring to the casual fan. I expect Fitch to grind this one out instead of gambling with Alves' Muay Thai. Fitch via decision.
Anderson Silva -500 vs. Chael Sonnen +325
Sonnen might have picked the wrong fight to talk as much trash as he has with Silva. It's not exactly like Silva needed the extra motivation after dicking around in his last fight to earn a spot in Dana White's doghouse. If White's assumed verbal beatdown of Silva didn't fire him up to put on a show, Sonnen certainly finished the job with a series of insults over the past few weeks. An Anderson Silva at the top of his game is probably the best fighter on the planet and that's precisely what I think Sonnen will face in the Octagon. Silva via 2nd round KO.
Alright boys and girls, enjoy the violence. I'm going to try to start hanging out around here more so please start coming back. I hear there's some sport having training camp right now? I might have some new writers swing by to cover this "NFL" thing I keep hearing about.
